I blame Facebook, and the change it has brought into my life. Suddenly, my world has expanded. The number of people I keep up with has expanded. I know how their life is going, I know what's important to them - be it the environment or their family or beer. I know where they're going, what they're doing, how they're feeling.
And dammit, I want to be able to go to their parties.
Because it feels more and more like my friends are right down the street. Even my sorority sisters in South Florida, my relatives in New York, my friends all over the world. We have casual conversation - and even serious conversation - so easily via Facebook. You never lose anyone, unless they want to be lost. You can chat with anyone, from any time in your life, if they're up for chatting with you.
It's AWESOME.
And it has bumped "transporter" to the top of my before-I-die wish list.
People, "transporter" has bumped "aliens." That's how serious I am.
I used to say that the number one thing I wanted to happen before I die was aliens. (Later modified to "friendly aliens" at a friend's suggestion.)
I will give up my alien dreams for a transporter. I want to be able to beam to a friend's house - anywhere - for dinner. To me, it's a natural, albeit massive, extension of what Facebook does. Facebook brought friends into my life in a wonderful, daily way. I connect and chat with my friends from all over, so easily.
And part of brain doesn't understand, then, why I can't just bop over to their house for tea.
I have become fascinated lately with the changes in our world that technology is bringing us faster and faster. Tech is changing. People are changing.
Baby, I'm ready to beam.

Yes!
I share your dream.

I used to ask my grandma when I was 5 when someone was going to build a transporter beam so I could come see her more often.

CJ - Excellent. Beam me over, Scotty!

Kim - Seriously, can you imagine the impact on families if we had transporters? (Good and bad! No avoiding family dinners by moving!)
